The Ask

Manipulate a headshot of a celebrity of our choosing in three different ways using Photoshop

The Process

  1. I started by choosing my photo, and I went with this headshot of Dominic Fike, who is one of my favorite musical artists.

  2. I started searching around various photoshop tutorials as well as looking at previous student’s results of this project as inspiration.

  3. I landed on a double exposure effect, an “open” head effect, and a paint splatter as my three designs, and used youtube tutorials to help me execute them, and then used skills I already knew from class to add details that made them my own.

  4. Detailed instructions on how I did each design are listed under each picture down below

  • I kept the first on the simpler side, I wanted to incorporate Dominic Fike’s music, so I created a double exposure effect using one of his album covers.

    Steps:

    1. Crop out subject from the photo, remove background

    2. Import album cover and placed under cropped subject

    3. Use ‘Pin Light’ blend mode on subject.

    4. Add Noise filter on subject

    5. Use erase tool to blend subjects head into the mountain

    6. In a separate tab with album cover, use quick selection tool to crop out text

    7. Move new text layer over top eyes of subject

    8. Use “Lighten” blend mode on text layer

    9. In the same separate tab from before, crop out the walking man using the quick selection tool

    10. Place walking man on top of the subject, add a drop shadow

  • 1. Use quick selection tool to crop out subject, copy and paste into a new layer

    2. Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical on new subject layer

    3. Hide new subject layer

    4. Use the clone stamp tool to remove the original subject from the image, leaving just the background

    5. Use the paintbrush, erase, and smudge tools accordingly to make the wall natural looking

    6. Add the Gaussian Blur filter to wall

    7. Turn on new subject filter

    8. Using the quick selection tool, select the top of the subjects head, adjust the selection to be in a more elliptical shape, copy and paste into new layer and delete from subject layer

    9. Use the erase tool to smooth out the edges of the head crop

    10. Using the transform using, rotate the head top layer and move to

    11. Add drop shadow to both head top and subject layer

    12. Download a door hinge PNG and place between head top layer and subject layer, “connecting” them

    13. In a new file, create a thin rectangle of any color, and use the text tool write out song lyrics using various fonts, and arrange them accordingly

    14. Export the text as a PNG and add to the photo being manipulated, place under the subject layer and position it so it’s “pouring” out of the subjects head

    15. Add Wave filter, adjust wavelength and amplitude to your liking

    16. Duplicate layer twice, position them being subject to being going across the background in different directions

    17. Add the Gaussian blur filter to both duplicates.

  • 1. Download a splatter paint brush set from the internet and installed into photoshop

    2. In a new layer, use the brushes to create a couple of splatters in various colors on the wall

    3. Add the blur effect on the splatters to match the blurred background and changed opacity to 90%

    4. Add a splatter paint mark on the subject’s shirt

    5. Use the overlay effect to blend the shirt mark in with the creases and shadows of the shirt.

    6. Using the clone stamp tool, erase the subjects facial features (eyes, lips, eyebrows, nostrils) while keeping all of the shadows and general outline of said features

    7. In a new layer, apply the splatter paint brush to the side of subjects head to create the ‘paint being thrown’ effect, then use a normal brush to paint over the subjects face

    8. Select the face paint layer, then turn off the layer while keeping the selection on the subject layer, then use the blur brush to smooth it out

    9. Using the clone stamp tool, blend the skin into the background within the selection

    10. Use the “Screen” blend option on the face paint so the shadows come through

    11. Using the dodge and burn brush tools to create more shadows and highlights

    12. Add drop shadow effect to face paint
